The Paul Lawrie Match Play receives an unfavorable spot on the schedule. Much of the world’s elite are on the heels of usually at least two weeks in the States for the WGC-Bridgestone and PGA Championship, meaning they’re unlikely to reverse course to Europe right away. Plus, some players have opted for the tropical climes of Fiji or have stayed for the Wyndham Championship.

There are still some solid rising players here at Bad Griesbach to go with some accomplished veterans.

In the round of 64, a few matchups caught my eye.

Italy’s Edoardo Molinari battles Sweden’s Robert Karlsson at 10:25 a.m. local. This would have been a world-class draw in the late 2000s, but neither are too far gone from peak form.

Molinari escaped from the doldrums with a win at the Trophee Hassan II in April. He rose from 618th in the world, and as low as 1,119th, to 245th. He’s now settled at No. 278.

Karlsson hasn’t won since 2010, but advanced to the Paul Lawrie Match Play finals in 2015. The former European Tour Order of Merit winner in 2008 is ranked No. 406 in the world.

Peter Hanson vs. Paul Lawrie pits 2012 Team Europe Ryder Cup teammates.

World No. 115 Nicolas Colsaerts is the highest-ranked in the field. He takes on Ashun Wu, a European Tour winner in 2015 and 2016.
