FedEx Cup Power Rankings: Top ten at The Northern Trust
The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin at a new course for The Northern Trust. With elimination looming, who tops this week’s Power Rankings?
The PGA TOUR season has come to an end. 47 tournaments, spanning the globe, have been put in the books. That chapter is over, and now it’s time for the next – the opening event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, The Northern Trust.
We’ve had outstanding major winners in 2017; Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas winning their first, while Jordan Spieth gave himself a chance at the career Grand Slam in just his fifth season. Dustin Johnson looked to be unbeatable for months, but he’s struggled to find his way to the top of leaderboards recently. There’s a feeling that almost anybody can win in any given week.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs change everything, though. This week, 125 players qualify, and 120 will tee it up at Glen Oaks Club, stepping in for Liberty National in its preparation for the Presidents Cup. At the end of the week, 25 players head home for the offseason, while the top 100 will move on to the newly-renamed Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston.
Glen Oaks is a 7,350-yard, par-70 track that was renovated by Craig Currier (formerly of Bethpage State Park) in 2011. What has emerged has been referred to as “the Augusta of the North” – high praise that the designers may not have been seeking, but certainly appreciate. Wide, tightly-mown fairways, sharp white bunkers, and greens which require pinpoint precision could certainly add to the comparison, and the challenge.
Who will come out on top in the first stop of the Playoffs? Let’s take a look at ten favorites for the Northern Trust.
