The Northern Trust: Top five sleeper picks
Patrick Cantlay teased us with his phenomenal ability from his days at Stanford and early on in his pro career before a back injury robbed him of two years.
That, coupled with personal tragedy, wiped him from our collective minds as a new wash of great young players enter faster than we can keep track.
Competing for the first time since 2014, the 25-year-old has been lights out since his first start back in February at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
He’s made the cut in every start this season, though there’s only been eight of them. As far as I could tell, there’s no indication either way if it has to do with status or injury.
Either way, a runner-up at the Valspar and a T3 at the RBC Heritage played a big part in Cantlay making the Playoffs with ease.
Cantlay doesn’t have enough starts to qualify for ranking in the PGA Tour stat categories, but he has a positive strokes gained mark in all the major categories excluding around the green at a meager -.108.
His solid overall game and modest distance off the tee should help Cantlay go 9-for-9 this year in playing the weekend and perhaps more.
