Like Kevin Tway, Harold Varner III has advanced to the Dell Technologies Championship in his FedEx Cup Playoffs debut. Unlike Tway, who safely qualified for the first two events after missing cuts at the Wyndham and The Northern Trust, Varner III has had to sweat it out every step of the way.

Varner III worked his way into the coveted top 125 with a T10 at the Wyndham that included a final round 69. His work was not done.

Needing roughly a top-25 to keep his run alive, Varner III summoned a T20 at the Northern Trust set into motion with an opening 67.

The 27-year-old did not qualify for the PGA Championship, so he has a week of recent rest that others in this field don’t.

If the high-stakes pressure hasn’t boiled Varner III to run on fumes at this point, he has the game to tame TPC Boston on his first try.

Varner III crushes the ball (30th in distance) and is 30th in greens in regulation. Putting is what’s held Varner back from contending for a PGA Tour win. Playing a course with bentgrass greens should help the Ohio native’s comfort with the flat stick.
