BMW Championship Power Rankings: Top ten at Conway Farms
Take a player coming off his worst finish in over a month, and put him in the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Doesn’t always sound like a formula for success, does it? Well, it doesn’t hurt when that player is Dustin Johnson, and that “worst finish” was a tie for 18th in the 100-player field of the Dell Technologies Championship.
DJ may be third in what looks to be a three-man race to the FedEx Cup championship, currently sitting about 400 points behind leader Jordan Spieth and Dell Technologies winner Justin Thomas. Johnson is my favorite at the 7,200-yard Conway Farms based on his power advantage, as well as his fantastic wedge game. Almost identical to Thomas in several ways, Johnson continues to assault flags on approach. It’s a fairly simple equation – more greens in regulation, more birdie chances, lower scores.
Dustin Johnson, of course, joins Thomas and Spieth as locks to make their way to East Lake in the FedEx Cup top five, guaranteeing himself a shot at the title with a win in Atlanta. Perhaps that leads him to take this week a bit easy. On the other hand, it’s that much more likely to be a dogfight between the three to get ready for the season finale. As great as this year has been, my bets are going to DJ, who was literally unbeatable early on.
