FedEx Cup Playoffs: Five Sleepers for the BMW Championship
Robert Streb has had to earn his way into the Dell Technologies Championship and BMW Championship. With the pressure turned up, the 30-year-old Kansan has delivered.
Streb entered July with one top 10 on the season back in February. He missed seven of nine cuts between the spring and summer. He now appears to have straightened things out starting with the Greenbrier Classic.
There, he posted four rounds in the 60s to finish solo second one stroke behind Xander Schauffele. It would have been Streb’s second career Tour win and first since 2014.
I like his chances to find success at Conway Farms this week, a place he’s played well before. A first-round 71 hampered his chances here in 2015, but he responded to play the final three rounds in 10-under-par to finish tied for 23rd and just six strokes off of second place. Jason Day ran amok that year, winning at 22-under.
Streb’s another guy who’s not going to wow you off the tee, but the guy is sharp with a wedge in his hand. He’s 23rd in strokes gained around-the-green and 40th in scrambling from the rough.
The weather forecast in Illinois this weekend looks benign, but things could get a little breezy in the middle rounds. If hitting the greens proves difficult, that’ll be advantage Streb against the field.
It’s safe to say his game has come along way since the 2009 Western Amateur where Streb tied for 51st at Conway Farms. He finished behind the likes of Patrick Reed, Peter Uihlein and Patrick Cantlay while placing ahead of names like Victor Dubuisson, Ben Martin, and Emiliano Grillo.
