Our lowest-priced player in the lineup this week, Webb Simpson leads off a team that is going to be built primarily of mid-level players. As we continue, we’ll get deeper into the reason for that, but Simpson’s place is definitely deserved at East Lake.

Ranked 41st in the world and 16th in the FedEx Cup, Simpson comes into the Tour Championship in solid form. The Wake Forest alum has three top-ten finishes in his last four starts, and he hasn’t missed a cut since the Wells Fargo Championship in May. No, there’s no cut this week, but that’s a testament to his consistency, if nothing else.

Simpson has made his money this year with impressive accuracy off the tee, ranked 29th in driving accuracy. Despite some shaky iron work – Simpson is ranked just 110th in greens-in-regulation percentage – he’s settled into a better putting rhythm after the anchor ban. Simpson has moved from 129th in putting average a year ago, to 29th this season. He may never be a lights-out putter again, but at least it isn’t a liability anymore.

In four career trips to the Tour Championship, Simpson has two top-five finishes, most recently in 2013. His form isn’t that far off, statistically, from that year, so we’ll look to Webb to replicate those results.
