The days of Patrick Cantlay being a low-priced value pick were supposed to be over weeks ago. He’s 12-for-12 in his comeback season, and even though he likely trails Greenbrier winner Xander Schauffele for Rookie of the Year honors, he’ll get his chance to make the case once more this week in Atlanta.

For now, though, we’ll enjoy the benefit of Cantlay as a high-ceiling player with a mid-tier price. The 25-year-old has finished inside the top 15 in each of the first three FedEx Cup Playoff events, with top-ten showings at The Northern Trust and the BMW Championship. During that stretch, he hasn’t carded a single round over par, and he’s got just 17 bogeys or worse, with one bogey-free round in each event.

It’s performance like that that brought Cantlay to this point of the Playoffs. He started this postseason at 78th in the points race, and he had work to do just to make it to Conway Farms, much less the TOUR Championship. But according to PGATour.com’s official stats, he ranks second in the Playoffs in greens in regulation, and leads the field in scrambling.

The experience factor may not be there, but this week has been a long time coming for Cantlay, who was once a can’t miss prospect coming out of UCLA. If he can break through in Atlanta, he could use this as a launching pad for the rest of his career. That’s a guy you want on your team.
