PGA TOUR Power Rankings: 2017 CIMB Classic
Brendan Steele enters this week at the CIMB Classic in the enviable position of being perfect on the season. Granted, we’re only a week into the 2017-18 schedule, but you can’t win them all without winning the first one, and that’s just what Steele did at the Safeway Open.
Steele entered the fourth round Sunday at Silverado Resort and Spa trailing leader Tyler Duncan by two shots.
As Duncan (75 on Sunday) fell off the pace, Steele took advantage, shooting a three-under 69 to finish at -14. Not only did Steele complete the final-round comeback, but he also did so with the likes of Tony Finau and Phil Mickelson hot on his heels. That will test anybody’s moxie, and Steele passed that test with flying colors.
Steele has played the CIMB Classic three times, and only once has he finished outside the top-25. That was 2016, for reference, when he finished tied for 26th place. The year before, in 2016, Steele finished tied for third place, coming in alongside Kevin Na at -24.
The 34-year-old’s win in Napa has already punched his ticket to the Tournament of Champions, the Masters, and likely another deep run in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Add that hot streak to Steele’s positive past at Kuala Lumpur GCC, and you’ve got a recipe for success.
