Few have a track record at Valderrama like Joost Luiten. He placed solo second at last year’s Open de España and solo fifth at the Andalucía Masters in 2010.

Last year he was in the final group and was within a shot or two of the lead all day but could not charge past winner Andrew Johnston. Luiten made par on the final eight holes to come up a shot short. In 2015, the Dutchman posted 69 on Sunday to match the low score of the day and fall three behind winner Graeme McDowell.

More recently, Luiten has played pretty consistently. His last three starts feature a T12 at the Portugal Masters, T36 at the Alfred Dunhill Links and T32 last week at the Italian Open. Luiten’s last 13 rounds have all been at par or better.

For the year, the 31-year-old has played the weekend in 18 of 22 events with one top-10 and eight top-25s.

Luiten is one of the straighter hitters in Europe, hitting over 60 percent of his fairways and over 68 percent of greens in regulation. This will be his third start in as many weeks, though his best finish, a T7 at the Lyoness Open, was on his third week in a row.

The pride of the Netherlands has quietly been a solid European Tour player for years. A win this week would be his fifth since 2013.
