Sanderson Farms Championship: Power Rankings
It isn’t necessarily always wise to lean on Luke Donald in events that project to be birdiefests, but with putting at a premium at the Country Club of Jackson, the former world No. 1 seems like a reasonable pick this week.
Donald, 39, is making his Sanderson Farms Championship debut. He comes in off two weeks of rest following a T50 at the Italian Open and a T7 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship the week before.
The Englishman is seeking his first worldwide win since 2013. He came close to ending that spell in the spring when he took second place at Harbor Town.
Donald’s usually accurate off the tee, but he struggled last season on the PGA Tour at 147th in accuracy. That’s bad news for someone 178th in distance. He was still marvelous around the greens, finishing third in strokes gained putting and second in sand saves. Even cracking the top 75 or 100 in accuracy off the tee will allow Donald to let his short game shine versus just helping save par.
With a week off to prepare, I like Donald to fare well in his first trip to Mississippi.
