SHANGHAI, CHINA – OCTOBER 27: Patrick Cantlay of the United States plays his fourth shot on the 14th hole during the second round of the WGC – HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club on October 27, 2017 in Shanghai, China. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images) /

Patrick Cantlay continues to seize every opportunity he gets. The former world No. 1 amateur is remaking a name for himself in 2017 with top-20 finishes galore, the latest coming in his first World Golf Championship last week at the HSBC-Champions (T15).

Cantlay is one of few players in the field making the journey from China to Las Vegas, but I don’t expect a little jet lag to stop the 25-year-old. Plus, he was off since the TOUR Championship a month ago. Cantlay has placed in the top 50 in a patchwork schedule of 14 worldwide events he played in 2017.

Now equipped with full PGA Tour status after doing enough with his medical exemption, imagine what he can do with the pressure off?

He has no glaring in his game as positive strokes gained marks across the board demonstrate. Cantlay was 23rd in strokes gained approaching-the-green last season and top 50 in both eagle and birdie average.

This will be Cantlay’s first start at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. It won’t be long before he wins his first PGA Tour event. Could it be this week in the desert?
