The tournament committee extended an invitation to native son Oosthuizen, who plays predominantly on the PGA Tour. He, along with eight others, will try to become the first South African to win this event since Trevor Immelman in 2007.
King Louis has kept a low profile in 2017, playing in just 17 events to date (plus the Presidents Cup). That’s his lightest year since turning pro over a decade ago.
Oosthuizen hasn’t played in a stroke play event since he tied for 63rd out of 69 at the BMW Championship in September. His 2017 is highlighted by T2 finishes at The PLAYERS and PGA Championship. Oosthuizen has missed just one cut all year, which came at the Open Championship.
He’s in jeopardy of completing just his second calendar year since 2007 without a win, a testament to the consistency of a player some know only for his 2010 Open Championship win.
Oosthuizen was in the positive in all strokes gained categories on the PGA Tour in 2016-17. While he’s known for his sweet swing, his short game could be what helps him to a high finish this week. Oosthuizen was sixth in sand saves and 23rd in strokes gained putting last season.
The Mossel Bay native is making his seventh appearance at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. He had his best pound-for-pound finish last year in taking ninth out of 72. He took seventh out of 30 in 2015.
His previous results at this event are 2010: 12th/12, 2012: 4th/12, 2013: T14th/30, 2014: T7th/30, 2015: T11th/30.
