PGA TOUR Power Rankings: OHL Classic at Mayakoba
Don’t look now, but Webb Simpson is on his way back up the ranks of the PGA TOUR. With the struggles of adjusting away from the anchored putter now clearly in his past, Simpson is stringing together some strong performances, and the next stop could well be the winner’s circle.
Over the last two years, the Wake Forest grad had dropped as low as 90th in the Official World Golf Ranking, and just a year ago, he was all the way down at No. 79. This week, he’ll tee off at El Camaleon at No. 37, and he’s targeting his first victory since the 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Simpson’s recent form couldn’t be much better heading into his third start of the new season. He’s coming off back-to-back top-25 finishes to open the year, and if you go back to the end of last season, it only gets better. Counting the final events of the 2016-17 season, Simpson is in the middle of a run of six top-25 finishes in his last seven starts. Three of those – the Wyndham, the Northern Trust, and the BMW Championship – ended in the top ten.
The 32-year-old has only played Mayakoba once before, but the result was solid, a T24 just last year. Considering the way Simpson has been playing lately, he’s got a high floor for success this week.
