PGA TOUR: OHL Mayakoba Classic top five sleeper picks
Another past collegiate standout on this list comes in the form of Beau Hossler. It’s hard to believe he’s only 22 considering we’ve known about him since the 2012 US Open. Hossler was an all-American at the University of Texas and has quickly advanced to the PGA Tour after graduating from the Web.com Tour in 2017.
He’s hit the ground running this fall, going 3-for-3 in cuts made. He tied for 10th at the Sanderson Farms Championship two weeks ago and was in the final group en route to a T7 at the Shriners Hospitals For Childrens Open last week.
This will be Hossler’s first career appearance at El Camaleón, but that will be the case for most courses he’ll come to this season. I don’t think course newness will keep him from playing well, and perhaps even competing for the Rookie of the Year if things shake his way.
If he’s to find success this week, it’ll likely be due to his prowess on the greens. Hossler is a big guy, but he’s not an elite ballstriker. Instead, he gets it done with the putter (first on the Web.com Tour in putts per round) and his wedges (10th in sand saves, 17th in scrambling).
As long as Hossler avoids trouble off the tee (88th in driving accuracy on the Web), he should be in position to have plenty of birdie putts this week.
