RSM Classic Power Rankings: Top ten at Sea Island
Mackenzie Hughes, who now appears to be going by Mac per PGATour.com, is your RSM Classic defending champion. He edged Camilo Villegas, Henrik Norlander, Billy Horschel and Blayne Barber in a playoff that concluded on Monday. He rolled in a put from off the green on the par-3 17th to seal his thrilling maiden victory.
The 26-year-old Canadian set the course record (61) in round one en route to winning with all four rounds in the 60s. The early success off the Web.com Tour inserted him into the Rookie of the Year discussion, but he’s cooled off some since then.
Hughes’ only top-10 since came at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February (T10). He’s had flashes with a T16 at The PLAYERS and by advancing to the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Of late, Hughes missed the cut at the Safeway Open last month and again last week at the OHL Classic.
Despite an up-and-down year, his putting has been elite. Hughes finished 2016-17 eighth in strokes gained putting.
