A clutch, knee-knocking four-footer for birdie gave young Matthew Fitzpatrick his biggest win to date at the 2016 DP World Tour Championship.

In the win, Fitzpatrick was second in the field in driving accuracy (80.4 percent) and putts per GIR (2). In 2017, he’s 32nd and 56th, respectively. He’s usually pretty restrained off the tee (163rd in 2017), but he can hit it out there when needed as evidenced by reaching No. 21 in last year’s Dubai field in that category.

The way the 23-year-old Englishman’s been playing, a title defense is not at all far-fetched. Fitzpatrick won the Omega European Masters in early September and has since gone T11, T15, T15, T9, T11 and T8.

Fitzpatrick tied for fourth in 2015 in his only other start at the DP World Tour Championship. He posted three rounds in the 60s and was under par all four days.
