European Tour: Australian PGA Championship top 10 power rankings
Matt Jones struck gold on his home course, The Australian, in Queensland last week at the Australian Open where he tied for second place. Even before his big week, he seemed like a confident guy thanks to earning his PGA Tour card for 2017-18 this fall.
“To play the way I did in ‘16 and ‘17 I think was not typical of myself, but then to lose my card but to get it back at the Web finals again, it was good,” Jones said in his pre-Australian Open press conference as transcribed by the PGA Tour of Australasia. “I didn’t want to have to rely on sponsor exemptions and minimal starts again this year on tour and now that I’ve got my full card back I can select the schedule, which is nice, and play courses that I want.”
Perhaps Royal Pines will grow into a course Jones, 37, will play more often. This week is just his second Australian PGA start and first at Royal Pines.
Prior to last week’s strong showing, Jones tied for fifth and tied for 20th at Web.com Tour playoff events and picked up three top-25 finishes early in the year on the PGA Tour.
Jones finished last season on the PGA Tour 28th in driving distance, 140th in driving accuracy and 17th in scrambling. We’ll see if his bomb and gouge style can get it done this week.
