European Tour: Australian PGA Championship top 10 power rankings
Wade Ormsby skipped the Australian Open last week in his home country, but clearly he made the right decision. The 37-year-old Adelaide native won for the first time on the European Tour in his 264th career start at the UBS Hong Kong Open, fending off chasers Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Tommy Fleetwood.
The 34-year-old has played well at different points this season, placing fifth in his last start at the Andalucía Masters and tying for fifth in Fiji and tying for sixth in Denmark. If he doesn’t celebrate too hard, he could have another big week in front of his home fans.
“I’ve played a lot of golf in Europe, everywhere, and a few bumps along the way but it’s pretty cool to get a win this late in your career,” Ormsby was quoted by Golfweek’s Alistair Tait. “A few of my mates are over here, so that makes it pretty special, having mates around makes it all the more special.
“I probably won’t sleep too much on that flight on the way to Oz tonight.”
Ormsby has played well at the Australian PGA. He earned four top-10s pre-Royal Pines and tied for second place in 2014, losing a playoff won by Greg Chalmers and featuring Adam Scott.
He was sixth in scrambling last year and 39th in sand saves, so if weather plays a factor, Ormsby could be equipped to handle it.
