SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – NOVEMBER 24: Cameron Smith of Australia hits an approach shot on the 12th hole during day two of the 2017 Australian Golf Open at the Australian Golf Club on November 24, 2017 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images) /

Could we see 20-something Australians named Cameron win two weeks in a row? Cameron Smith, 24, would like to think so. Smith settled for fourth place and just two shots off the pace of 22-year-old Cameron Davis at the Australian Open.

Smith shouldn’t be too discouraged. The Brisbane native logged his third consecutive top-five this fall, which comes on the heels of a T5 at the CIMB Classic and a solo third at the CJ Cup.

Smith had two other top-10s on the PGA Tour last season and won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Jonas Blixt.

Still, as young players are prone to do, he had a slump. It’s tough to follow up success, and Smith struggled in the summer after his win in April.

“My agent sat me down and gave me a good talking to, which was probably well needed,” Smith is quoted by ESPN’s Greg Growden. “And since then I have put 100 percent into every shot, trying to get the job done.”

On the young PGA Tour 2017-18 season, Smith is 21st in driving accuracy, eighth in GIR and eighth in putting average.

Smith owns an impressive record at the Australian PGA, going T35 in 2013, T9 in 2014, fifth in 2015 and T15 in 2016. Eleven of his 16 rounds in that span were under par, with two coming in 2015 when the winning score was even par amid miserable conditions.
