The Sony Open in Hawaii marks the first full-field event of 2018. Who will top the first power rankings of the new year at Waialae?

The Sentry Tournament of Champions is great and all, but we were inundated with plenty of no-cut, big money events in the fall and winter silly season.

It finally feels like the rubber is hitting the road with the full-field, 36-hole cut Sony Open this week in Honolulu, Hawaii, before the Tour heads off to the West Coast

Few events have had staying power like the Sony which returns to Waialae Country Club where the tournament’s been held since its inception in 1965.

Measuring at 7,044 yards for a par 70, this Seth Raynor design is not a bomber’s paradise. Length doesn’t hurt, though, as evidenced by Justin Thomas’ 27-under-par masterpiece last year.

Greens typically run at 11 on the stimpmeter and the rough is not overwhelming. If the wind is tamped down, the course doesn’t show much teeth on its own. The winning score has been 20-under-par four of the last five years and hasn’t been worse than 11-under since the turn of the millennium.

With early forecasts calling for winds upwards of 25 miles per hour, it could be a battle of survival.

Over a dozen players from last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions will make the short plane trip from Maui and give this field a little star power.

Here’s a look at 10 players destined for a big week in the comforts of Hawaii.
