The way Justin Rose has been chugging along, tying for 22nd as he did at last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the European Tour was a blemish on his resume.

The Englishman has played as well as anyone in the world since the FedEx Cup Playoffs last fall. Starting with a come-from-behind victory at the WGC HSBC-Champions (HSBC’s got to be the current record holder for most golf tournaments sponsored) in September, Rose has won three of his last seven starts.

Rose piled up top-40 finishes in past starts at Torrey Pines until really breaking through in 2017 to get into title contention and finish T4.

The 12-hour time zone from Abu Dhabi to California could be worrisome, but Rose is the epitome of a global player. Plus, gaining 12 hours sure beats losing them.

Plus, a fantastic ball striker like Rose (ninth in strokes gained tee-to-green in 2016-17) should always have a chance at this event.
