Farmers Insurance Open Power Rankings: Top ten at Torrey Pines
Even without a win, Charley Hoffman turned in a career year in 2017. Two runner-up finishes and two third-places helped him onto his first international team representing the US at the Presidents Cup.
For a little holiday bonus, Hoffman closed the calendar year with a solo second against the talented, albeit limited, field at the Hero World Challenge.
Hoffman’s a San Diego native who’s had success in his de facto home tournament, but he has to go back a few years to remember.
He tied for 54th at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2017, tied for 43rd in ’16 and missed the cut in ’15. Hoffman did, however, tie for seventh in 2014 and 2009.
Hoffman was 17th in birdie average and 12th in par-5 average last season. If conditions turn out as benign as the forecast shows, he could be able to attack a few more pins than normal.
"“I’ve watched this tournament since I can remember watching golf. I remember coming out here and watching Fuzzy (Zoeller) and John Daly and great guys who won 20 years ago,” Hoffman said in 2009. “This is my major. I’m not in any majors this year. This is the tournament I want to win, and hopefully I win this and get into a few more majors.”"
