Farmers Insurance Open Power Rankings: Top ten at Torrey Pines
Don’t look now, but Jason Day played pretty well to end 2017. How do top-30s in his last 10 starts sound?
Last year will go down as a disappointment for the former world No. 1 who went winless for the first time since 2012, but he showed it’s not time to write him off by any means.
Day had a top-10 at the PGA Championship and parlayed it into two top-10s in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He went into the offseason with a solo fifth in his home Australian Open.
With time to recharge, it’ll be interesting to see if Day responds well to flying somewhat under the radar.
It’s not easy to win after two months off, but Day can draw from memories of his 2015 playoff win (and forget what happened the last two years). He was also one shot away from a playoff in 2014 and finished T9 in 2013.
There’s no doubt Day can overpower this course, and his short game (15th strokes gained around-the-green) out of the juicy rough is another advantage.
If Day puts it together this week, few can match his raw talent.
