Ryan Fox appears destined to win his first European Tour event any day now. Could this be the week? The New Zealander came close Sunday with a T3 finish at the Maybank Championship.

Four rounds in the 60s, including a Sunday 66, still left him three out of a playoff in Malaysia, but he can take away plenty of positives.

We all know Fox can smoke the ball — he was second on the European Tour in driving distance in 2017 — but when he’s finding the short grass, watch out. The 30-year-old hit 73.2 percent of his fairways last week, up from his 46.7 average that placed him near dead last the season prior.

If Fox can even just find a happy medium of those two extremes, he’ll be in for a prosperous career.

More recent results show Fox tied for 32nd in Abu Dhabi and was in the top five at a PGA Tour of Australia in January.

In Perth, Fox tied for ninth in 2014 and tied for 52nd in 2016. Last year he made the 36-hole cut before falling just shy of the final 24.

Five top-10s helped Fox to finish 14th in the Race to Dubai as a rookie last season. He could aim higher with a big finish this week.
