ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth: Top six picks on the European Tour
Lee Westwood makes his debut in Perth coming off of a T11 at last week’s Maybank Championship in Malaysia.
It shouldn’t take a strong iron player like Westy too much time to adjust to Lake Karrinyup where you’ve got to make birdies in bunches.
“I think it’s a format where you’ve got to adopt a more aggressive approach,” Westwood, 44, was quoted by SBS.com. “There’s no good edging your way in. You’ve got to try to come out as fast you can. You may as well be aggressive and go for everything.”
Westwood was ninth in the field in greens in regulation last week and finished inside the top 40 last season on the European Tour.
The Englishman has also said this week he still feels fit and strong to contend in majors, and he appears willing to try to prove that early on.
Ranked No. 73 in the world, he’s got some work to do to get in the field for the Masters. This will be Westwood’s fourth week of competition in a row in his quest for ranking points.
The Englishman hasn’t played four times in a row since the end of 2015 where his fourth start in a row was a T2 at the Thailand Golf Championship.
There isn’t anyone else in the field with more match play experience than Westwood. If he can keep up his play from Malaysia, Westwood could be an intimidating draw in the knockout round.
