Jeunghun Wang became the first debutant to win the Oman Open since Ernie Els in 2005. This is nothing new for the 22-year-old South Korean who’s already racked up three European Tour wins, all coming on his first or second start at a tournament.

Wang triumphed in Qatar by beating Jaco Van Zyl and Joakim Lagergren by getting up-and-down from behind the green for birdie on the par-5 18th.

After climbing up to as high as No. 39 in the world and earning an invitation to the Masters, Wang had a tough summer. He’s now outside the top 100, but is off to a solid start in 2018.

He’s 4-for-4 in cuts made since the turn of the calendar, including a T15 in Abu Dhabi and a T6 in Dubai. His last start was an up-and-down experience in Oman as he shot 73-69-74-68 to tie for 28th.

Wang’s winning formula didn’t offer up anything too spectacular. He finished 40th in the field in driving accuracy, 37th in distance, 26th in GIR and 12th in putts per GIR. Mistake-free golf led to only five bogeys made and no doubles or worse.

His short game was fantastic that week, and has been sharp in 2018 as he’s fourth on the European Tour in scrambling (78.2 percent).
