WGC-Mexico Championship Power Rankings: Top ten at Chapultepec
DJ comes in off of a week of rest, ready to defend his title at the WGC-Mexico Championship. He’s had a lot of title defenses lately, which have fueled his reign atop the world rankings that’s stretched for over a year.
Johnson looked poised to lap the field in Mexico last year, leading by four with nine holes to go. Rising stars Jon Rahm and runner-up Tommy Fleetwood both made a charge, but Johnson held on by one for the win at 14-under.
Finishing near the bottom of the pack (57th) in driving accuracy did Johnson little harm. He overpowered Chapultepec to finish sixth in GIR and was sharp on arrival to the green, finishing fifth in putts per GIR.
Johnson isn’t coming off of a win like last year, but his T16 finish at the Genesis Open was seventh top-20 in a row and fourth in 2018.
His last two Sunday scores of 72 at Pebble Beach and 73 at Riviera weren’t great and kept him from winning again, but that’s not enough for me to pick anyone else at No. 1.
