In such a top-heavy field, you can certainly field a high-quality DraftKings lineup without cracking the $10,000 salary mark. In most of my weekly events, for instance, I’m using Luke List, who at $9,600 gives a little more flexibility on the lower end of rosters without having to scrape the absolute bottom of the barrel. However, this week, I’m more than happy to take a chance on Phil Mickelson, even if it means some budget-conscious decisions later.

For those of us who have been watching this year, it’s clear that rumors of the 47-year-old’s impending career doom have been greatly exaggerated. Heck, the fact that he has only one win this year is surprising. Lefty has finished inside the top ten five times in just nine starts so far, including four in a row that built to his win in Mexico.

In theory, there’s a little bit of risk in rostering Mickelson this week, in that his mind is now about 99.99% focused on the Masters next week. If, for some reason, he were to get off to a slow start, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him sort of going through the motions before making an early exit. Still, even if he’s admitted that this is simply a competitive practice round before Augusta, he’s too much of a gamer to mail it in completely.

You certainly don’t want to put any unnecessary limits on your roster, but if you can find any spare dollars in your DraftKings salary cap, you should absolutely take this calculated risk.
