The Masters Power Rankings: Top ten picks to don the green jacket
Paul Casey should hardly be considered a dark horse pick at this rate. He’s been in the mix at the Masters each of the last three years, posting T6, T4 and 6 finishes. He also has two more top-10s as well as another pair of top-20s back in the 2000s. For his tournament career, Casey’s up to $1.8 million in earnings.
After nearly missing the cut in 2017 at three-over, Casey played the weekend in Augusta about as good as any with scores of 68 and 69.
Casey may be post-dark horse status here in Augusta due to his recent performance. He ended his eight-year PGA Tour win drought by triumphing at the Valspar Championship three weeks ago. For the 2017-18 season and one European Tour event, Casey has nine top-20 results.
Augusta is a tough place to end such a drought, but Casey’s frame of mind should be healthy this week. His strokes gained stats are solid across the board and he’s hitting the ball beautifully at No. 2 in SG tee-to-green.
Casey’s putting (93rd on TOUR in strokes gained) isn’t ideal for a Masters contender. If he can hit greens in the right spots, though, it doesn’t always take an elite putting week to prevail.
