Phil Mickelson, 47, is closer to becoming eligible for the senior circuit (er, Champions Tour) than his last Masters win in 2010. Don’t let that sway you from thinking he can’t become the oldest major championship winner of all time with a win this week.

He finally broke through to win for the first time since 2013 last month at the WGC-Mexico Championship. Lefty’s got three other top-10s and has played the weekend five times in six events with a 36-hole cut in 2017-18.

Phil comes in good form to his happy place. He ended his career major drought here in 2004 and has been absolutely lights-out at Augusta.

For these rankings I’ll usually just cherry pick a player’s best results at a given tournament, but let’s just stop to appreciate how good Mickelson’s been in his career beginning in 1991:

T46th (amateur), DNP in 1992, T34, DNP ’94, T7, 3, MC, T12, T6, T7, 3, 3, 3, 1, 10, 1, T24, T5, 5, 1, T27, T3, T54, MC, T2, MC, T22.

Wow.

Everyone respects the hell out of Augusta, but Phil’s reverance seems to go even further. His game usually follows suit.

"“There are very few courses where I just get excited just to go play, and every time I stand on the first tee at Augusta National, I’m excited just to play a round of golf,” Mickelson once said. “There are very few things in the game that I love more than just playing here, and it’s great to play and see the course when there’s nobody out here.”"
