The Masters: Top five storylines to watch this weekend at Augusta National
This answer has got to be Marc Leishman. I mean, it shouldn’t be, but it is. He’s the type of player who consistently flies under the radar, and that’s understandable. He doesn’t have the celebrity cachet that someone like Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth does. But what he does have is just as important at Augusta National – game.
Through 36 holes, Leishman has put together an absolute stunner of a week at the Masters. With eight birdies and an eagle, he’s only got two blemishes on the card. He bogeyed 14 – the hardest hole on the course – on Friday, and made an unfortunate double on 15 on Thursday. He’d be leading the tournament comfortably if Patrick Reed hadn’t gone insane yesterday.
A win this week would be the culmination of several years of drama for the Leishman family at the Masters. He was paired with fellow Aussie Adam Scott five years ago when battled his way to the green jacket. Then, in 2015, he entered Masters week in form, but he had to pull out to be with his wife, who was facing life-threatening health issues. She made it through, and he’s made it back to golf’s grandest stage.
Leishman has four top-ten finishes in majors in his career. Slipping on the green jacket in a field this stacked would be the ultimate crowning achievement for someone who deserves far more recognition than he gets.
