Valero Texas Open: Power Rankings at TPC San Antonio
The Valero Texas Open is one of the PGA TOUR’s most respected events, and this week it will boast a field to match. We’re taking a close look at the top ten contenders in San Antonio in this week’s power rankings.
One of the PGA Tour’s longest standing tournaments has its time in the spotlight this week. The Valero Texas Open is approaching the century mark as Bob MacDonald was the original winner in 1922.
The event’s always been in the San Antonio area, is the world’s sixth oldest professional golf tournament and is the third oldest on the PGA Tour.
The Texas Open moved to TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course in 2010 when it opened.
The Greg Norman design measures at 7,435 yards for a par 72. It’s regarded as a pretty solid test of golf that usually demands a good ballstriking week to pierce through the prevailing winds and avoid perilous bunkers.
Strokes gained tee-to-green and strokes gained around-the-green are a couple key stats I’m looking for this week.
The early forecast shows consistent double-digit mile per hour winds that could climb upwards of 20 MPH. A little rain could be on the way, too.
Winning score has been between eight- and 14-under par since 2010 with Brendan Steele winning at 12-under by one over Brooks Koepka last year.
This tournament is prone to draw a few big names each year, but the fields are generally weak given its status as a mid-season, full-field PGA Tour event.
I’m rolling with a lot of veterans in my top 10 this week, but don’t be surprised if a youngster breaks the trend of established winners on Tour this season.
