Valero Texas Open: Power Rankings at TPC San Antonio
Another week, another spot in my top 10 for Matt Kuchar. Mr. Consistent plays well at just about any style of course; TPC San Antonio is no different.
He tied for fourth at the Texas Open in 2014 and has never missed a cut playing here each year since 2012.
“It’s a demanding driving golf course as well as approaches. I think approaches are really tough. You’ve got a lot of big fall-offs around the greens,” Kuchar said in 2014. The greens have a lot of movement in them.
So, I think from a ball-striking perspective, particularly off the tee I feel like that’s one of my strengths is keeping myself in play, giving myself a lot of chances and been doing a good job of that this week.”
Kuchar is hardly ever out of a hole and is good enough to make more birdies here than most. He’s 22nd on Tour in proximity to the hole and 30th in strokes gained putting so as long as he’s keeping it in the park, Kuchar’s got a chance this week.
The Georgian’s made all seven of his cuts in 2018 and won his pool at the WGC-Match Play. He has stroke play top-10s at the Phoenix Open and Houston Open and was T28 at the Masters.
Kuchar’s too good of a player to not have won on Tour since 2014. Against a relatively weak field, I could see Kuch picking up his first win in Texas right here.
