AUGUSTA, GA – APRIL 06: Shubhankar Sharma of India plays his shot from the second tee during the second round of the 2018 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 6, 2018 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images) /

Shubhankar Sharma appears to be a lock for European Tour Rookie of the Year honors. The 21-year-old Indian had breakout wins this season at the Joburg Open in December and the Maybank Championship in February. He backed it up with top-10s at the WGC-Mexico Championship and nearly made a furious rally to win the Indian Open.

Unlike so many young, big-hitting players, Sharma is more precise. He’s 131st on the European Tour in driving distance but is 45th in driving accuracy.

Sharma’s second in strokes gained approach-the-green and 29th in scrambling.

I’m hesitant to slot Sharma higher in the rankings as he’s traveling 13 hours ahead to China from the PGA Tour’s Texas Open. It was Sharma’s third missed cut in a row, but I chalk that up to no more than a little youthful inconsistency.

I like Sharma to hit plenty of greens this week and give himself plenty of birdie looks. He’s 33rd in birdies per round in 2018.
