Last year at Justin Thomas’ PGA Championship win at Quail Hollow, Rickie Fowler was in street clothes waiting to greet him. The way my rankings shake out, Fowler will be by his side again, but this time as a playing competitor.

When Justin Thomas is in the field list on any given week, it takes a compelling argument to bet against him.

With world No. 1 Dustin Johnson idle this week, Thomas can climb to world No. 1 with a T12 or better. He had an opportunity to do so at the Masters, but admitted the prospect of achieveing the feat affected his performance.

Kudos to Thomas for admitting to something other players wouldn’t. I don’t think these nerves will last, though.

Not only is Thomas a tough competitor, but he’s shown he’s capable of playing well in Charlotte.

Thomas finished T7 at the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship. In 2017, Thomas shot 10-under in the final 54 holes in tough conditions.

Thomas has two wins in the 2017-18 PGA Tour season and hasn’t finished worse than T22.

This tournament favors guys who stripe the ball like Thomas. He’s one of the longest guys on Tour and hits the ball well with any club in his hand (fifth in strokes gained tee-to-green).

He and Bud Cauley couldn’t find the magic at last week’s team event, but Thomas is as tough a one-man team as they come.
