Wells Fargo Championship Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for Quail Hollow
Webb Simpson tends to play well in his home state, whether here on his home course or at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro.
Since missing his first two cuts in 2009-10, the Raleigh native and Charlotte resident’s reeled off five of six cuts in the Wells Fargo Championship and tied for 33rd at last year’s PGA Championship.
He finished solo fourth in 2012 and tied for second in 2015, albeit seven shots behind Rory McIlroy.
Simpson is third on tour in par-5 scoring (4.5) and has been an elite putter (ninth in strokes gained). He’s 16th in proximity from the fairway, but is in the high hundreds if having to play from the rough.
A good week off the tee will be helpful, but Simpson’s been able to get it done pretty well with the formula that’s been used. He’s got four top-10s and a T20 at the Masters in 2018 and just one missed cut.
It’s hard to believe Simpson’s gone five years since his last victory, but it’s tough to believe this 32-year-old’s done winning on the PGA Tour. His home fans could give him the boost he needs.
