Wells Fargo Championship Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for Quail Hollow
Phil’s trying to shed his bridesmaid status at Quail Hollow. The Wells Fargo Championship has padded Mickelson’s wallet over the last 15 years, but he’s yet to cash a winner’s check.
Lefty made all 13 cuts at Quail Hollow for the PGA Tour event, though he missed the cut at the 2017 PGA Championship. His closest call was 2010 when he finished solo second behind a hard-charging Rory McIlroy (who we’ll get to shortly).
Mickelson has nine top-10s at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Quail Hollow reminds Phil of a course at which he’s had plenty of success.
"“…the greens are very similar (to Augusta National) They’re the same grass, very similar speed, very similar slope,” Mickelson said in 2010. “And I haven’t been on the course yet, but last year we had first-cut rough like we had at Augusta, so you had a lot of recovery shots, and I thought with the trees being similar, I thought it had a very similar feel to Augusta.”"
Augusta was Phil’s last start four weeks ago. He’ll be plenty of rested to pick up where he left off in 2018. He won the WGC-Mexico Championship, owns four top-10s and hasn’t missed a cut since his first start of the year.
It’s tough to stick it close to the hole at Quail Hollow, making Phil’s ability from the bunkers (first in sand save) and on the greens (second in strokes gained putting) valuable along with his length.
