THE PLAYERS Championship brings one of golf’s best fields to the home of the PGA TOUR each year. Who will rise to the top of the power rankings in this pivotal event?

Whether you believe THE PLAYERS Championship should be considered the “fifth major” or not, it delivers a major championship-caliber field every year. This year’s $10.5 million purse is its biggest ever, which makes it the richest non-major and third-largest in golf behind the U.S. Open and the Masters.

The world’s top international players and anyone who’s anyone on the PGA Tour will be at the famed TPC Sawgrass.

The Pete Dye design has seen all sorts of players win. The short, but straight Fred Funk won in 2005. A bomber like Phil won in 2007. Out of nowhere, Craig Perks won in 2002.

International players have won 10 of the last 15 events. Only two have won in their debut, Perks and Hal Sutton in 1983.

Sawgrass even has the distinction of limiting Tiger Woods to only two wins here.

The course measures to 7,215 yards. Not a ton of drivers are needed off the tee. Rather, if you can get it in the fairway with whatever club you choose, it’s about playing to the right spots and being in position to play into one of the smallest sets of greens on Tour.

TifEagle grass replaced Bermuda on the greens prior to last year’s tournament and a handful of holes were modified.

There aren’t a ton of players with lights out resumes at the PLAYERS like you may expect. It seems to play into the fact that this tournament often rewards whoever is playing well that week without any tricks (OK, except the 17th).

Wich such a star-studded field, it’s hard to go wrong when picking favorites – but that’s what we do. Here’s who we’re watching to come out on top.
