Memorial Tournament Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for Muirfield Village
Despite being overtaken for world No. 1, DJ has still had a solid 2018. After his win at the season opening Tournament of Champions, Johnson has picked up three more top-10s including a T10 at Augusta and a T2 at Pebble Beach.
He’s made six of six cuts and owns a streak of 11 dating back to last summer.
Johnson’s had some success at Muirfield, too. He finished solo third and just one off of a playoff with Jon Curran and Will McGirt where he would have been the heavy favorite.
Johnson also was solo fourth in 2011, T13 in 2015 and T14 in 2009. He’s played the weekend eight of 10 times.
Here, you’ve got to hit it in the fairway,” Johnson said in 2016. “It’s definitely a second shot golf course, but first of all, you’ve got to hit it in the fairway.”
Honestly, though, with DJ’s length, a little waywardness wouldn’t kill him. He’s first in strokes gained off the tee despite sitting 125th in driving accuracy.
Thing is, DJ is pretty good at limiting his misses to where he’ll still have good lines to the flag even if he’s got to pipe it out of the rough. Unsurprisingly, he’s first on Tour in proximity from the rough (37 feet, 4 inches) which isn’t far off from his mark from the fairway (33-1).
Johnson’s top 40 in all major strokes gained categories and is on pace for one of his best putting seasons (34th in SG).
