Memorial Tournament Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for Muirfield Village
McIlroy is back at the Memorial for just the second time since 2014. Methinks he should come here more often.
The Northern Irishman owns three top-10s and a T15 in six starts. He posted a personal best T4 in his last start in 2016.
While it doesn’t really feel like it, McIlroy is having a pretty solid 2018. He won at Bay Hill, runner up in Dubai, T5 at Augusta and a solo second at the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW Championship.
McIlroy held the solo 36-hole lead and was tied after 54 holes last week at Wentworth.
"“It’s not a bad week. I got off to a great start. I gave myself a nice cushion after 36, but yeah, there’s still enough loose shots in that first 36 holes to know that, okay, it’s not quite there, but I could have maybe held it together a bit better over the final couple days but look, I held in there,” McIlroy said. “I scrambled well. I hung in tough. I shot a couple under par rounds at the weekend and just wasn’t good enough.”"
McIlroy has putted well this season, sitting at 41st in strokes gained which would be his best since leading the Tour in that stat in 2014.
Finding fairways will be key this week as he’s 10th in fairway proximity and 122nd from the rough.
McIlroy averages just a shade over par on the par-4s and is above Tour average in scrambling and sand saves.
Some players hopping the pond without rest unnerve me, but I like the veteran McIlroy to jump right in and contend.
