FedEx St. Jude Classic Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for TPC Southwind
Tony Finau is having a nice under-the-radar season. It surprised me a bit to see him check in at 12th in the FedEx Cup standings, but it makes sense when you notice how steady the 28-year-old’s been. He comes to TPC Southwind looking to extend his streak of five made cuts in a row.
Finau tied for 13th last week, was T21 at the PLAYERS and T10 at the Masters. He’s acquitting himself well at big events and should be able to contend this week on talent alone.
Finau has a pair of runner-ups early this season to give him four top-10s and 10 top-25s in 2017-18.
Statistically, he’s a positive in all strokes gained categories and has made a jump this season on and around the greens.
The more par-5s the better for Finau (fourth in par-5 scoring) but he’s a modest 54th in par-5 scoring. He’s also 25th in strokes gained approaching the green and should have plenty of short clubs in his hands this week.
This will be his FedEx St. Jude debut. Finau’s lone PGA Tour win at the Puerto Rico Open in 2016 came on his first time seeing the course.
