FedEx St. Jude Classic Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for TPC Southwind
Everyone talks about how Phil’s never won the U.S. Open, but he has a similarly puzzling winless streak at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Lefty’s placed T11 or better each of the past five years without getting over the hump. He placed as high as T2 in 2016.
He was in contention last year and even briefly held the lead on Sunday, but fell back to a ninth. He finished near the top of the chart in par breakers but had three double bogeys in three of four rounds.
Mickelson is willing to criticize a course if it’s not to his liking. He glows about TPC Southwind.
"“I really like this tournament and this course. I think it’s the most underrated golf course we play on TOUR. I think the beauty of this course is in its simplicity and how it really challenges you with precision, not necessarily overwhelming length,” Mickelson said in 2016. “But the greens are small. You have to shape shots, and you have to hit it in the proper position or you get blocked out by trees. I think that this TPC Southwind is one of our best courses we have, one of my favorites, and I look forward to coming back here every year.”"
Mickelson is having a great season with a win at the WGC-Mexico Championship highlighting six top-10s in the wraparound season.
Phil is eighth in proximity from the rough and 40th in the fairway, so don’t let his shaky driving dissuade you from going with him this week. He’s also first in scrambling from inside 10 yards and second in strokes gained putting, so there won’t be much that’ll faze Mickelson this week.
