U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying: Who’s moving on to Shinnecock?
Several U.S. Open Sectional Qualifiers took place on Monday afternoon. We’ve got all the results from the longest day in golf. Who’s in and who’s out for Shinnecock Hills?
The field headed to Shinnecock Hills June 14-17 is truly beginning to take form. There were 860 golfers competing for 74 spots at U.S. Open sectional qualifiers, with all of them in the U.S. taking place on Monday.
It’s one of the more underrated days in golf of the year in this writer’s humble opinion. Plus, it’s always interesting to see Tour players get to play 36 holes in shorts. Tiger Woods would have loved it, but thankfully, he’s already in the field for next week.
One of the more interesting things you see each year at this time is just how many PGA TOUR mainstays have to “Monday qualify” for the U.S. Open. Only about half the field is automatically eligible in any given year. For TOUR pros, the top-60 cutoff in the Official World Golf Ranking is the standard. Major winners and players who qualified for the Tour Championship are in, as are the top ten from the previous year’s national championship.
There were some big storylines on Monday, including a player extending his major championship start streak that dates back to 2001.
Here’s a look at results and notes from each sectional qualifier.
