The 2018 Travelers Championship boasts the best field in the event’s history. We’re breaking down the top ten contenders this week at TPC River Highlands.

Building a quality tournament field the week after the U.S. Open is an unenviable task. The top players want a break from the grind they just emerged from. Others are already plotting their European trip with the Open Championship looming a month away.

With those disadvantages laid out, the Travelers Championship is building its reputation as a high-quality PGA Tour event. Players and caddies are treated well, the fans pack the place and in this year’s case, it’s a hop, skip and a jump from Shinnecock Hills in Long Island to TPC River Highlands in Hartford.

Eight major champions from this decade are in the field this week as well as five of the world’s top 10 and nine of the top 20.

Having great finishes like we had last year, with Jordan Spieth’s hole out and ensuing celebration, is also a great way to get some good pub.

So, what kind of test awaits?

Well, we’ve got one of the Tour’s shortest courses, measuring 6,841 yards for a par of 70. The winning score has been double digits under par every year since 1993 (TPC River Highlands has hosted since 1991). It’s also the site of Jim Furyk’s record 58 in 2016, as well as Patrick Cantlay’s 60 as a 19-year-old amateur in 2011.

Par-4 scoring is important this week, though capitalizing on the two par-5s is obviously big, too. There are 115 recently renovated bunkers that are some of the toughest on Tour.

Bentgrass is featured at TPC River Highlands from tee to green. The rough is not overly penal, though there is some tree line.

A variety of players have won here from the methodical Ken Duke to the bomber Bubba Watson (twice).

The par-4, 444-yard 18th almost always proves important on Sunday. Four of the last seven Travelers Championships have resulted in playoffs and the other three were one-shot wins.

Here’s a look at ten players who could pick up a big Travelers check this week.
