Military Tribute at The Greenbrier: Power Rankings for TPC Old White
The PGA Tour heads to one of the U.S.’ oldest resorts for the newly named Military Tribute at the Greenbrier
The dog days of summer continue for the PGA Tour with a modest, yet unspectacular field assembled at the Old White TPC course in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. This week, the TOUR honors the nation’s heroes at the Military Tribute at the Greenbrier.
Residents Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson will hang out at home with defending champion Xander Schauffele also in the mix.
This event, less clunkily and formerly known as the Greenbrier Classic, has been at the same course since 2010. The 2016 event was canceled due to severe flooding, but it returned last year as good as new.
Stuart Appleby shot a Sunday 59 to come back for a win in 2010. The course played short and soft, but was lengthened in 2013 to add a little teeth, though low scores are still out there on the par-70, 7,286-yard layout.
Winning scores have alternated between 16-under and 13-under the past four years.
The fairways are pretty generous this week with strokes gained tee-to-green a stat to watch. Bombers are welcome here, though all playing styles can get it done at the Old White.
Early weather forecasts call for potential rain and storms on the weekend, otherwise temperatures in the 70s and 80s with sun looks prevalent.
The top three finishers inside the top 10 who are not already qualified for the Open Championship will earn entry into the event, looming July 19-22 at Carnoustie.
There are the standard 156 players in the field this week. They’re competing for a $7.8 million purse.
Here’s a glimpse into who could slip on the green jacket this weekend at the Greenbrier. Just not that green jacket.
