A host of big names are in the field at this week’s Scottish Open looking to get an early taste of links golf before the Open

The Scottish city of Gullane is rightly known as the home of Muirfield, an Open Championship venue as recently as 2013. The city’s got another gem in Gullane Golf Club, site of the 2018 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

It’s a relative newcomer to the tournament rotation, still, as it prepares to host for the second time after debuting in 2015.

The course plays to a par of 70 at 7,133 yards. It uses holes 1-6 and 9-18 from its No. 1 course and Nos. 7-8 from No. 2. The nines are a bit skewed as the front tapes out at 3,416 yards and the back at 3,717.

The back can often play easier, though, as Rickie Fowler was 9-under on the back and birdied three of his last four holes to win the 2015 Scottish Open at 12-under total.

Spoiler alert, Fowler will reappear in my top 10.

He had to earn his top-10 status this week, though, as a who’s who is in Scottland in search of some links golf before the Open at Carnoustie next week.

A handful of Americans from the PGA Tour are on site to join five of the top 10 from the European Tour’s season long Race to Dubai standings.

Weather is always a factor in links golf, but it looks like this week will be pretty tame. Winds could get into low double digits miles per hour, but it will be dry with high temperatures scaring 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

The course expects to play firm and fast in the fairways with green speeds around 10.

Gullane offers plenty of uphill and downhill holes, which could lead to some very short and very long drives.

Scrambling was a key stat for the leaders in 2015.

Six of the last eight Open Champions have teed it up at the Scottish Open prior to hoisting the Claret Jug. Phil Mickelson was the last to win the double dip back in 2013.

Speaking of, Mickelson will be up soon in our top 10. Let’s get to it.
