The Open Championship: Power ranking the top 10 for Carnoustie
Rickie Fowler’s reputation as one of America’s best links players continues. The 29-year-old made good work of his Open Championship prep by tying for sixth last week at the Scottish Open.
He was in contention for most of the tournament and carded four rounds of 68 or lower.
"“I feel great. Really looking forward to it. We went over to Carnoustie on Tuesday to get a look at it,” Fowler said Sunday. “I really like where the game’s at. We’re over here, ready to go. I feel like we’ve gotten some good, fair test, a little bit of wind, some days where it hasn’t been too windy. But I think it’s been a successful week getting ready for the Open.”"
Fowler won the Scottish Open in 2015 and, at the Open Championship, has made all but one cut in eight trips.
In those eight visits he has a T5 (2011), T2 (2014) and three other top-30s.
He’s also finished T22 or better in his last six majors.
Fowler is in the positive in all the main strokes gained categories. He’s relatively long and straight and ranks 25th in greens in regulation.
If his reliable ball striking fails, he’s 15th in sand saves and fifth in scrambling overall.
Fowler has four top-10s in 2018 including solo runner up at the Masters. He’s finished top-20 in five straight events leading into the week.
If Fowler’s going to add a major to his resume this is the week, inexperience at Carnoustie be damned.
