Raise your hand if you would have thought of Brande Grace as a serious contender for this week’s Open Championship even a few weeks ago? If your hand is up, go ahead and put it down – this is an internet golf column, nobody can see you. Also, well done, since you’ve clearly been doing your homework.

The 30-year-old South African star is putting together quite the competitive season on both sides of the pond. He’s just not doing it with a whole lot of fanfare, which will suit him just fine. He’s 13-for-13 in made cuts on the PGA TOUR this year, along with seven top-25 finishes, most recently a T-25 at the U.S. Open. His last European start was a fifth-place tie at the BMW PGA Championship. In other words, his form is just fine right now, and he’s well rested.

Grace has also played fairly well around Carnoustie in the past, including a victory at the 2012 Dunhill Links. Grace shot 3-under 69 at Carnoustie in the third round that year, and he matched that mark at this year’s contest.

Grace is far from a bomber, but he’ll benefit from a baked-out course that will keep iron in play on many holes, as well as a lack of par-5’s. He’s a solid putter, so he’ll look for every advantage he can get on Carnoustie’s surprisingly slow greens.

At just $7,900, Grace is a great mid-range play this week, especially if you’re looking to save some salary at the top of your range.
