Count Rory McIlroy among those disappointed to see Firestone go. His 2014 WGC-Bridgestone win is one of five top-10s at Firestone in seven starts.

McIlroy’s worst finish at this event is a T68 in 2009 at age 20. Since then, he’s done T27 or better.

“This is my bread and butter,” McIlroy said in 2014. “This is what I really enjoy, ball through the air and target golf.”

McIlroy is coming off of a solo second two weeks ago at the Open Championship, his third runner-up of the year counting Dubai and the BMW PGA.

McIlroy also won at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year and has made five of his last six cuts (all T28 or better).

The Northern Irishman is a positive in all the main strokes gained categories, including 10th tee to green.

He’s 32nd in par-4 scoring and eighth on par-5s.

McIlroy has been locked in with his irons this season. Just keep the ball in play and roll in some putts and he’s primed for his biggest win of the year.
